Hunt County Railroad Town
Welcome to Celeste, a small Hunt County city on U.S. Highway 69 between Greenville and Denison in northeast Texas.
Celeste is a small city in the northwestern corner of Hunt County, Texas, situated on U.S. Highway 69 roughly twelve miles northwest of Greenville, the county seat, and about sixty miles northeast of downtown Dallas. The town — whose name comes from the Spanish word for light blue — sits near the headwaters of the Sabine River, in the gently rolling farmland that characterizes this part of Northeast Texas. Celeste took shape in the late nineteenth century as a product of railroad development, like many Hunt County communities. The coming of the rail line gave area farmers a shipping point and spawned a commercial core that grew through the early twentieth century. The town's population has ebbed and flowed with the fortunes of rural Texas — expanding in the early 1900s, contracting in the middle of the century, then stabilizing in recent decades at around 800 residents. The local economy is rooted in agriculture, ranching and small trade, with many residents commuting to Greenville or farther into the Dallas–Fort Worth region for work. U.S. Highway 69 keeps the town connected: Denison and the Red River lie about forty miles northwest, while Greenville provides retail, medical and civic services a short drive to the southeast. Celeste offers a quiet, close-knit small-town setting where the school district and local churches anchor community life. The city's compact downtown, school campuses and residential blocks cluster along and just off the highway, giving the community a walkable small-town center that quickly gives way to pasture and cropland. Celeste appeals to people seeking rural acreage, a slower pace and lower-density living within commuting reach of the metroplex, as well as to families with longstanding ties to Hunt County.
Celeste is in Hunt County, in the northwestern part of the county in Northeast Texas. The city sits on U.S. Highway 69 about 12 miles northwest of Greenville, which serves as the county seat and nearest larger community.
Celeste Independent School District serves the community and operates an elementary campus, Celeste Junior High School and Celeste High School, all located within the town. The district is part of Texas Education Agency Region 10, which also covers the Dallas–Fort Worth area.
Celeste is about 60 miles northeast of downtown Dallas. Travelers typically follow U.S. Highway 69 southeast to Greenville and then connect to the regional highway network, placing the Dallas–Fort Worth metroplex within roughly an hour's drive.
U.S. Highway 69 runs directly through Celeste, serving as the town's main route. It leads northwest about 40 miles to Denison near the Oklahoma border and southeast about 12 miles to Greenville, the Hunt County seat.
Celeste had a population of 809 at the 2020 census. The figure has remained in the several-hundred range through recent decades, following an earlier peak in the early twentieth century and a mid-century decline.
