Celeste is a small city in the northwestern corner of Hunt County, Texas, situated on U.S. Highway 69 roughly twelve miles northwest of Greenville, the county seat, and about sixty miles northeast of downtown Dallas. The town — whose name comes from the Spanish word for light blue — sits near the headwaters of the Sabine River, in the gently rolling farmland that characterizes this part of Northeast Texas. Celeste took shape in the late nineteenth century as a product of railroad development, like many Hunt County communities. The coming of the rail line gave area farmers a shipping point and spawned a commercial core that grew through the early twentieth century.
