Yoakum is a small city that straddles Lavaca and DeWitt counties in South Texas, in the region between San Antonio, Houston, and Victoria. With a population of about 5,900, it is a genuine crossroads town whose identity was shaped first by the railroad and later by the leather industry, and its downtown and civic calendar still reflect that heritage. The city grew as a railroad junction, and for much of the twentieth century it was a center of leather goods manufacturing, earning it the nickname the "Land of Leather." The tradition remains a point of civic pride and is celebrated each year with the Land of Leather Days festival, complete with a chili cook-off, carnival, and leather-themed vendor market. Yoakum also honors its agricultural roots: the Tom Tom Festival celebrates the town's tomato-growing tradition, and a youth rodeo is held each July. Downtown Yoakum centers on Pershing Square, a public space that has anchored the revitalization of the commercial district and hosts community events throughout the year. The Yoakum Heritage Museum preserves the story of the city's railroad and manufacturing past through artifacts and exhibits, and the compact, walkable core around the square gives the town a distinct sense of place. The city is served by Yoakum Independent School District, and its residential neighborhoods radiate outward from the downtown and Yoakum City Park, where families gather for recreation. Housing is predominantly modest, owner-occupied single-family homes, reflecting Yoakum's working-class, small-town character and its position as an approachable alternative within the South Texas crossroads region. Yoakum sits along the U.S. 77 corridor, connecting it north toward Hallettsville and south toward Cuero and Victoria, which keeps the city tied to the larger communities of the Coastal Bend and South Texas while preserving its own slower, community-centered pace.
