Willis is a city in north-central Montgomery County, Texas, set in the Piney Woods about eight miles north of Conroe and roughly 40 miles north of downtown Houston. It sits astride Interstate 45, which runs through the community and has made it a natural staging point for Houston's northward expansion, while Lake Conroe and the Sam Houston National Forest frame its northern and eastern edges. The 2020 census counted about 6,400 residents, a figure that has grown quickly as the surrounding Willis ISD area absorbs suburban development.
The city's origins are rooted in the railroad. In 1870, the Willis brothers donated land to the International–Great Northern Railroad as it extended its line north from Houston, and the community that took their name grew into a shipping point for the region's lumber, agriculture, and, for a time, tobacco. That rail-era and timber heritage anchors Willis's identity, and the town's compact historic core still reflects its turn-of-the-century commercial past.
Today Willis functions as a growing exurban community with deep ties to its natural surroundings. Lake Conroe, a major Montgomery County reservoir, lies just to the north and supports boating, fishing, and shoreline recreation, while the Sam Houston National Forest offers extensive hiking and camping. The economy is driven by residential growth, retail and services, and a substantial commuter population traveling toward Conroe, The Woodlands, and Houston.
Education is provided by Willis Independent School District, which operates about 11 schools and serves roughly 9,000 students, including large master-planned communities such as The Woodlands Hills. For homebuyers, Willis offers a distinctive combination of small-town history, lake and forest access, and Interstate 45 convenience — a quieter base within reach of one of the nation's largest metropolitan economies.
