Silsbee is a town in Hardin County, in the Piney Woods of Southeast Texas, often described as a gateway to Big Thicket National Preserve. Silsbee's identity is inseparable from timber: the town was founded when John Henry Kirby's Gulf, Beaumont and Kansas City Railway reached the site in 1894, and a logging camp and sawmill soon followed on the railroad's route. The settlement was first called Mill Town before being renamed Silsbee for Nathan D. Silsbee, one of Kirby's East Coast business partners. Timber shaped the community's early decades, and that heritage is still honored today — one of the town's elementary schools bears John Henry Kirby's name.
