Scroggins is an unincorporated community in Franklin County, Texas, located in the northeastern part of the state and closely tied to the shoreline of Lake Cypress Springs. The community sits along Farm to Market Road 115, roughly 15 miles south of Mount Vernon, the Franklin County seat, and about 22 miles east of Sulphur Springs. Its setting among the lake and the surrounding pine and hardwood countryside defines its character as a rural lakeside destination. Settlement in the Scroggins area began in the 1850s. The community grew up around a sawmill operated by Milt Scroggins, from whom it takes its name, and it became a shipping point on the East Line and Red River Railroad after the line was built through the area in 1877. This rail connection anchored Scroggins as a small rural community during the late 19th century, even as it remained sparsely populated. In the modern era, Scroggins has become best known for its location on Lake Cypress Springs, a reservoir in Franklin County that has attracted lakeside residential development. The community now functions primarily as a residential and recreational area, with lakefront homes, ranch and estate properties, and seasonal residences spread along the shoreline and surrounding roads. Lakeside communities such as King's Country occupy portions of the lake's north shore.
