Possum Kingdom Lake, popularly known as P.K., is a reservoir on the Brazos River in North Texas, located primarily in Palo Pinto County with its shoreline extending into Stephens, Jack, and Young counties. It sits about 90 miles northwest of Fort Worth and has been a defining feature of the region since the mid-20th century. The lake covers roughly 17,000 acres with more than 300 miles of shoreline, much of it rugged and scenic.
The lake owes its existence to the public-works era of the Great Depression. Construction of the Morris Sheppard Dam began in 1936, employing hundreds of workers through the Works Progress Administration, and was completed in 1941. The dam, named for Texas Senator John Morris Sheppard, created the first water-supply reservoir in the Brazos River basin. The lake's name recalls the early 1900s, when possums were said to be plentiful in the area for hunters.
Today Possum Kingdom Lake is one of North Texas's premier lake recreation destinations. Boating, waterskiing, fishing, scuba diving, and camping draw visitors and residents, and Possum Kingdom State Park provides campgrounds, hiking trails, and public boat ramps. The lake's most recognized landmark is Hell's Gate, a narrow strait flanked by towering cliffs on the south end, where boaters gather during the summer. The surrounding Palo Pinto hills add a scenic backdrop uncommon for a Texas reservoir.
The lake area is a mix of full-time residents, second-home owners, and vacation visitors. Nearby towns anchor daily life: Graham, to the north, and Mineral Wells, to the east, are each about a 45-minute drive and provide shopping, schools, and services. The lake area is served by several small school districts, including Graford ISD and Graham ISD, reflecting its multi-county geography.
