Millsap is a small town in west-central Parker County, Texas, on Interstate 20 about 15 miles west of Weatherford, the county seat, and roughly 40 miles west of Fort Worth. Its approximately 400 residents live at the western edge of the county, where the Cross Timbers begin to give way to the hillier country around Mineral Wells and the Palo Pinto County line. The town traces its name and beginnings to the nineteenth century. Named for Fuller Millsap, an early settler, it received a post office in 1877 and grew rapidly once the Texas and Pacific Railway arrived in 1880. By the 1890s Millsap was serving area farmers as a retail and shipping point, and within a decade it could claim a bank, more than a dozen businesses, three churches, a ten-grade institution called Millsap College, and a weekly newspaper, the Millsap News. The town's population rose from about 100 in 1890 to roughly 800 by 1920, before the mid-century decline that swept many rural rail towns reduced it to a few hundred. Today Millsap is a quiet residential and agricultural community. The Millsap Independent School District, covering about 124 square miles of west-central Parker County, anchors local life, with elementary, middle, and high school campuses in town.
