Kennedale is a city in southeastern Tarrant County, Texas, situated along State Highway 496 roughly ten miles southeast of downtown Fort Worth and immediately west of Arlington. Its location places residents between two of the Metroplex's major employment and entertainment centers while retaining the feel of a smaller, self-contained community. The city reported 8,517 residents in the 2020 census, and its position within Tarrant County keeps the full resources of the Dallas–Fort Worth region close at hand.
The area that became Kennedale was settled during the 1860s and 1870s at the site of a mineral-water well, which drew early visitors and gave the settlement its economic start. The community was named for Oliver S. Kennedy, who platted the townsite and donated every other lot to the Southern Pacific Railroad, a move that tied the young town's fortunes to the rails. By the late 1880s the town supported brick manufacturing, including the Kennedale Brick Works, which operated near the Fort Worth and New Orleans line at what is now Sonora Park. That industrial heritage shaped the city's early streets and its working-class character.
Today Kennedale functions as a predominantly residential community with a strong local identity and a history that remains visible in its park names and civic life. Its compact Kennedale Independent School District keeps elementary, junior high, and high school campuses close to home, and its park system, anchored by Sonora Park, provides everyday recreation within the city. Just beyond the city limits, Arlington offers AT&T Stadium, Globe Life Field, Six Flags Over Texas, and the University of Texas at Arlington, while downtown Fort Worth contributes museums, the Stockyards, and the Trinity Trails system.
The city appeals to households who want a shorter school commute and a small-town scale while working in Fort Worth, Arlington, or the wider Metroplex. Its housing stock spans several generations, from mid-century ranch homes and established streets on the west side to newer brick subdivisions on the east and larger acreage parcels along the edges.
