Kempner is a small city in southern Lampasas County, Texas, on U.S. Highway 190 in the gently rolling Hill Country between the county seat of Lampasas and the military and commercial centers of Copperas Cove and Killeen. The Lampasas River passes near the community, and the surrounding landscape mixes oak-covered hills, ranches, and small farms with newer residential lots. The community was founded in 1882 and named for Harris Kempner, a Galveston-based merchant, banker, and railroad investor. For most of its history it remained a small rural settlement, incorporating as a city in 1997 as growth from the Killeen–Temple area began to reach Lampasas County. Today Kempner is part of the Killeen–Temple–Fort Hood metropolitan statistical area, with a population of just over 1,100 residents. Kempner functions as a quiet residential and semi-rural community whose economy is closely tied to the nearby U.S. Army installation at Fort Hood, one of the largest military posts in the nation. Many residents commute to jobs on post or in Copperas Cove and Killeen, while others work in Lampasas, the county seat. The city itself supports a small commercial base along U.S. Highway 190. Students attend the Lampasas Independent School District, which serves the city and surrounding communities. The area's Hill Country setting, available land, and short commute to Fort Hood make Kempner a draw for military families, retirees, and those seeking country living with suburban convenience. Copperas Cove and Lampasas, each about 15 to 20 minutes away, supply shopping, dining, and services, while Killeen and Temple offer larger regional amenities. Kempner's blend of rural character, Hill Country scenery, and proximity to one of Texas' largest employers gives it a distinctive niche within the Fort Hood region.
