Grayson County Rail Town
Welcome to Gunter, a small Grayson County rail town on the fast-growing Preston Road and Dallas North Tollway corridor north of the Metroplex.
Gunter is a city in the southwestern corner of Grayson County, Texas, in the northern reaches of the Dallas–Fort Worth growth corridor. With a 2020 population of about 2,060, up from roughly 1,500 a decade earlier, it is a small town experiencing steady expansion as development pushes north along Preston Road and the Dallas North Tollway. Despite that growth, Gunter remains distinctly rural in feel, with most residents owning their homes. The town's origins are tied to the railroad. Gunter received a post office in 1898 and was formally organized as a community in 1902, when the tracks of the St. Louis, San Francisco and Texas Railway reached the area. Its namesake, John Gunter, was a cattleman and surveyor who donated land for the townsite. In the years just before the railroad arrived, a rail line from Sherman to Carrollton was proposed with right-of-way through his ranch; that branch, called the Red River, Texas, and Southern Railway, began laying track in 1901. The railroad's arrival established Gunter as a retail and community center for the surrounding farm country, a role the town filled for much of the twentieth century. Today Gunter is a close-knit North Texas community anchored by Gunter ISD, a small PK–12 district of about four schools and roughly 1,100 students that has posted strong academic results relative to its region. Daily life centers on the schools, churches, and local businesses, with Sherman and Denison supplying the nearest larger amenities. The city has begun absorbing the growth that characterizes the northern Metroplex fringe. New residential and commercial development has followed the Preston Road and Dallas North Tollway corridor, adding higher-end housing to a town long defined by modest in-town homes and surrounding acreage. Gunter suits households drawn to a rural, small-town setting with room to grow — families tied to the school district, buyers seeking larger lots or acreage, and those who want a quieter pace while remaining within reach of the Dallas–Fort Worth area to the south.
