Graham is a city in north-central Texas and the seat of Young County, an area rooted in ranching and the open country of the Rolling Plains. The town was settled in 1871 and grew around the Graham brothers, who acquired large holdings through the Texas Emigration and Land Company and helped revitalize the then-sparsely settled county. That pioneer-era history still shapes the community's identity. The centerpiece of Graham is its downtown square, which a courthouse mural claims is physically the largest of any town square in the country. The square is anchored by "The Arch," the stone door frame of the 1884 courthouse that survived a 1930s fire and has become a symbol of the community. Around it, the city's commercial and civic life gathers, and the courthouse square remains the heart of local activity. Water is central to Graham's recreation and character. Lake Graham and Lake Eddleman, joined by a small equalization channel a few miles north of town, serve as water reservoirs and as the setting for boating, fishing, and lakeside living, with public boat ramps on both lakes. These reservoirs make the town a regional destination for anglers and weekend recreation. The town also maintains a general-aviation airport, Graham Municipal Airport, with two paved runways within city limits. With a population of roughly 8,800, Graham functions as a regional hub for Young County, offering shopping, schools, health services, and civic institutions to a wide surrounding rural area. Its economy ties together ranching, agriculture, and local services, while the town retains a distinctly small-town, family-oriented feel.
