Flower Mound is a town in southern Denton County, Texas, with portions extending into Tarrant County, positioned about 20 miles northwest of Dallas and 25 miles northeast of Fort Worth. Its name comes from a prominent, wildflower-covered mound that early settlers used as a landmark, and the community's roots stretch back to 19th-century settlements marked by sites such as the Flower Mound Presbyterian Church, organized in 1854, and the 1861 Gibson-Grant Log House. For much of its history the area remained rural, but its transformation into a major suburb began in earnest with the Flower Mound New Town project, a federally supported plan to build a self-contained satellite town that would curb metropolitan sprawl.
