Copperas Cove is a city in Coryell County, Texas, in the Central Texas region immediately west of Killeen. Named for the mineral taste of its local spring water, the settlement took root in the late 19th century and grew modestly after the railroad arrived in the late 1880s. The Great Depression reduced the town to a few hundred residents, but its trajectory changed decisively in 1942, when the U.S. Army selected the surrounding area for Camp Hood, a new training center. The installation, which became Fort Hood, put Copperas Cove on the map and remains the dominant force in the region. The city's identity is inseparable from the military. Fort Hood bounds Copperas Cove on the east, and much of the local economy exists to provide services for the installation's soldiers and their families. Recreation centers on an 88-acre city park with sports fields and a pool, an 18-hole golf course, and a trail network, while the Hill Country and Central Texas lakes extend outdoor options nearby.
