Montgomery County Seat on the Shores

Condos & Apartments in Conroe, TX

Welcome to Conroe, the Montgomery County seat set on the shores of Lake Conroe and framed by the Sam Houston National Forest. Lakefront living and small-city character sit forty miles up I-45 from downtown Houston.

Conroe sits at the northern edge of Greater Houston's suburban arc, roughly 40 miles from downtown Houston along Interstate 45. Founded in the late 19th century as a lumber and railroad town, it was named for Isaac Conroe, a Union cavalry officer turned timber entrepreneur who established a sawmill here in 1881. The discovery of oil in the early 1930s transformed Conroe almost overnight, and the city still carries the nickname "Miracle City" from that boom era. Today, Conroe is the seat of Montgomery County and one of the fastest-growing cities in the Houston region, with a population that has roughly doubled since 2000. Lake Conroe defines much of the city's character and growth trajectory. The 21,000-acre reservoir, impounded in 1973, wraps around Conroe's western edge with 157 miles of shoreline. Lakefront communities — some gated and country-club oriented, others more modest — have drawn generations of Houstonians seeking weekend retreats and permanent homes alike. The lake supports boating, fishing, swimming, and a constellation of marinas, yacht clubs, and waterfront restaurants. The Sam Houston National Forest, a 163,000-acre expanse of piney woods, frames the city's northern edge and provides a counterpoint to the lake's open water. The Lone Star Hiking Trail, a 128-mile footpath recognized as one of the premier long-distance trails in Texas, cuts through the forest and draws hikers from across the state. Downtown Conroe has cultivated a distinct identity with its brick-paved streets, historic buildings housing restaurants and boutiques, and a growing live-music scene. The Crighton Theatre, built in 1934, continues to host plays and musicals, while the Owen Theatre and Heritage Place Park add to the downtown cultural footprint. With its blend of lake life, forest access, a historic downtown, and a direct I-45 connection to Houston, Conroe occupies a unique position among Houston's northern suburbs — offering amenities that go well beyond bedroom-community norms.
