Ben Wheeler is an unincorporated community and census-designated place in Van Zandt County, in East Texas. It sits along Highway 64 and Farm Road 773 in the southern part of the county, roughly an hour's drive southeast of Tyler and near the communities of Edom and Canton, in a region of rolling farmland and pine woods. The community has deep rural roots. Its historic townsite is defined by a small cluster of surviving buildings, the earliest dating to about 1915 and the latest to around 1930, with Moore's Store as the largest and most prominent structure. For much of its history Ben Wheeler was a quiet crossroads community serving the surrounding farms, reporting about 400 residents and dozens of small businesses at the turn of the twenty-first century. In recent years Ben Wheeler has undergone a notable revival. Local investment restored the town's historic downtown, and the boarded-up Moore's General Store was reborn as a restaurant and live music venue, joined by other food and music establishments such as the Forge Bar and Grill. That restoration gave the community a renewed identity as an arts and entertainment destination in East Texas. Today Ben Wheeler's calendar is anchored by events that draw visitors from across the region, including the Feral Hog Festival, the Ben Wheeler Birthday Bash, International Ford Model A Day, and the Far Out Art Fest. With a population of about 450, the community blends a working rural setting with a lively small-town arts scene, offering a distinctive combination of historic character, live music, and East Texas countryside within reach of Tyler and the Dallas area.
