Anna is a city in Collin County, Texas, located in the north-central part of the county about 11 miles northeast of McKinney and roughly 45 miles north of downtown Dallas. Home to about 17,000 residents, it sits along U.S. Highway 75 within the broader Dallas-Fort Worth metroplex, where Collin County has been one of the region's principal growth corridors. The city's roots are tied to the railroad. The Houston and Texas Central Railway passed through the area in 1873 on its route between Dallas and Denison, and the town was platted a decade later in 1883. The railroad built a depot in 1885, and that Anna Depot survives today as the oldest extant railroad station in Texas, now preserved as a museum at Sherley Heritage Park. Anna was incorporated in 1913, and its early identity as a small rail and farming community is still visible in its historic core. Today Anna functions as a residential city within the northern Collin County growth corridor. Its housing market is defined by new single-family and master-planned subdivisions, and its population has expanded substantially as buyers have sought new construction and larger homes north of McKinney. Public schools are part of the Anna Independent School District, which serves the city and surrounding areas with about nine schools. Commuting is a central part of local life. U.S. Highway 75 provides the main route south toward McKinney, Plano, and the Legacy business corridor, with typical drive times of roughly 30 to 40 minutes to Plano and 45 to 55 minutes to downtown Dallas. State Highway 5 and Farm Road 455 offer additional connections. Parks, trails, and community events—anchored by Slayter Creek Park and the depot museum—round out a city that balances its historic railroad character with the ongoing expansion of the Dallas-Fort Worth region.
