Alvord is a town in Wise County, Texas, in the north-central part of the state, set along the U.S. 81/287 corridor that connects the Dallas–Fort Worth Metroplex with the Red River region. The 2020 census counted 1,351 residents, making it a genuinely small community by Texas standards, one rooted in the farming and ranching country of Wise County. Decatur, the county seat, lies about a half-hour to the south, while the larger cities of the Metroplex are reachable within roughly an hour.
The town's defining natural feature is the Lyndon B. Johnson National Grasslands, a collection of public grassland units managed by the U.S. Forest Service that surround Alvord to the north and west. The TADRA Point trailhead near town gives access to roughly 75 miles of marked trails used by hikers, equestrians, hunters, and campers. This expanse of restored prairie and cross-timbers woodland gives Alvord an unusually direct connection to public land, shaping both its recreation and its rural, open character.
For much of its history, Alvord has remained a small agricultural and ranching community, with its population hovering around a thousand residents through the late 20th century. That stability reflects a town that has grown gradually rather than through the rapid suburban expansion seen elsewhere on the Metroplex's edges. The result is a place that still feels like the Wise County of an earlier era, with a functioning small-town center, a close-knit school community, and wide-open countryside all around.
Alvord is served by its own independent school district, the three-campus Alvord ISD, which enrolls around 850 students from the town and surrounding area. Daily life centers on the schools, local businesses, and the surrounding countryside, with most larger services found in Decatur. For residents, Alvord offers a quiet, low-density home base where the national grasslands are a backyard resource and the Metroplex remains close enough for work, shopping, and cultural trips.
